Academia do Johnson – Fighting all forms of social exclusion

Academia do Johnson is an NGO, that aims to promote human development and well-being, through personalised support to children and young people from fragile family and social contexts, as well as to their families, by sharing humanist values and principles, such as justice, equity, freedom, solidarity and self-fulfilment.
The Academia do Johnson is the result of the perseverance and learnings from life of João Semedo, better known as Johnson, who had a very hard and adverse life path, with some deviant behaviours that even led to his arrest. After changing his life, Johnson focused on using his personal experience in order to prevent risk behaviours for other young people in vulnerable situations.
The mentoring programme aims to contribute to minimising the variables that promote social fragility, which are at the root of social exclusion and poverty of the communities.
Mentors work on the personal, social and school skills of these young people, stimulating their personal development and promoting greater awareness for the building of their life projects, while investing in positive leadership, conflict management and job training in their preferred areas.
